Runner and company have safely left the city ahead of the siege. Completing their class promotions with barely any time to spare.
Unfortunately Runner hasn't discovered the password he needs to begin the logoff process to save the 400,000 or so crewmates left alive in this game where dying truly means death.
The game continues to shift and change with each day and as a byproduct of Runner's actions.
Not only do the rules change, but those he's with have changed. No longer simple programs, they have reached actual sentience.
Pressing himself ever onwards to learn more about the world he finds himself surprised at every turn.
On top of navigating the ever changing game, the outside world has contacted him directly. Now he has to begin to navigate the situation as a gamer, IT support, and an officer.
Of course this would all be a lot easier if he hadn't gotten captured within a few hours of leaving Crivel.
Fate seems to be stacking the deck against him as quickly as she can this time around.
Otherlife Nightmares The Selfless Hero Trilogy (Audible Audio Edition) William D Arand Jeff Hays Books
The three hundred enlisted passengers trapped in the Other Life game are told by Jacob the Rapist from the first book that Runner is responsible for them being trapped in a game 40,000 years after they left earth and for some reason they all believe this guy. Three hundred thousand on one seems like a tough problem for Runner, but it like all the problems in this volume is resolved in an anticlimactic fashion. Runner is in such a strong position at the end of the story that it’s difficult to guess what problems will arise in the final volume of the series. The only real difficulty left is how the problems Runner is having with the current inhabitants of the earth outside the game will be resolved. So in many ways I felt that this book missed out on many opportunities to build a lot of dramatic tension, but there are still moments—especially at the climatic ending—when the author generated some genuine emotion in me and it saves the novel.Product details

Otherlife Nightmares The Selfless Hero Trilogy (Audible Audio Edition) William D Arand Jeff Hays Books Reviews
Solid sequel. Most questions on what is going on are answered, which makes some aspects of the story quite interesting. At the same time, the game part takes a backburner. In fact, the protagonist rather brutally breaks the game which at a few points does jar a bit. Still, I read the book in one go.
Editing is excellent. Story isn't some short piece of fluff work.
No bloody cliffhanger! Well written, lots of laughs with a few tears.
I highly recommend this.
It seems like it was a big thrill ride from start to finish. Just when I thought there would be a break, he just keep building his power base, or gets another goddess on his side, or makes a new invention. Thoroughly enjoyable book, but the pacing was so fast that I was left behind a few times. Some more recaps within the book may help.
This story defiantly progresses the story. The feel of the book is far heavier emotionally than the first book, making it not as fun to read as the first. Hopefully in the third we will learn more about the other areas and races of the world, bringing back some of the discovery and adventure that was lost.
Overall good book.
This series has been great fun. The first book may have been a glitch, but twice in a row? No, this is just a great idea, told very well. Even though, to some, the ending may have been very dark, it was fitting with the story and the character. Already purchased the next book, going to read it and hope to see more from this author.
The second in this series was no less fun and exciting. A little tragedy and comedy helped make this story great. There were a few unanswered questions, but I thi k the third book will help there.
I simply love this series! It's a great romp into the world of RPGLit but it give a very valid reason and never seems contrived. I'm not really a fan of the whole GameLit genre but decided to try them out after blasting through the Wild Waste trilogy and having a lot of fun with that one. It wasn't a mistake. Very well developed characters and a compelling story make this a must read- multiple times. As with the others in the series, the narrator does a good job but does (naturally) have his own take on voices that causes a bit of imaginary dissonance with the voices my own mind had set up...but still great!
