Genre LGBT Steampunk
Crimean war veteran-turned-newspaper editor Gareth Charles finds himself embroiled in the blackest side of the new Reform government when he investigates a string of arsons in the snowbound colonial outpost of New Eddington. After saving Firewalker Thomas Cole from the latest blaze, the two men find themselves in possession of a deadly secret -- and falling in love. Fugitives from justice, they must unravel the terrifying mystery before there's no New Eddington left to save.
As the firebug's evil plan comes to fruition, the two veterans realize the only things worth saving might just be each other.

I love M/M and I love Steampunk, but Firebug is not all that it could be. The concepts are good - but don't fully gel in the end. Far too many unanswered questions. First off, Cole. We don't get much in the way of why he is the man he is. Why is he a firewalker? Why is the judge a baddie, other than just to be bad? Loyalists? Revo lutionaries? What makes them take sides? The story just seems to stop, rather then end. Characters just disappear - like the butler and the Countess. If the plot of this story is - as in the description - the only thing worth saving may be each other - the connection between Gareth and Cole is strong - but not strong enough. The plot is sketched out - and has some pleasing turns- but has no resolution, no justice or promise for another volume.
The tale is fine if you are just wanting to pass the time with sexy men, but other than being attractive and in the same room, (and being war vets) there was little more to share between our lead characters. Firebug lacks the overarching Steampunkery that - say - The Inventor's Companion had or the delicious writing of Mexican Heat: Crimes & Cocktails, Book 1 - that tale in particular fleshes out the way two people can evolve through love and despite the obstacles of war (or in this case - drug war.)
In short - a nice long tale of lust, even if the plot's a mile wide and and inch deep.
